We promote & strongly recommend that the ‘Labour Room’ should be renamed as ‘Baby Welcome Room ( नवजात शिशु आगमन कक्ष ).

Background

The milieu of many labour rooms is suboptimal & the behavior of health care providers during delivery is not up to the mark. Love hormone or Oxytocin has a very important role to play in Birthing & Breastfeeding. If a mother has a negative birthing experience it can negatively affect both. Hence, Labour Room milieu has a significant role to play in successful parturition & breastfeeding. It is therefore critical that Labour Rooms undergo conceptual & physical changes including the label itself. The new label we propose is ‘Baby Welcome Room’ ( navajaat iSaSau Aagamana kxa ).

Concept

Every Baby should be appropriately welcomed at birth because it is also the arrival of a new citizen. The baby’s mother should also be well felicitated for having nurtured the new citizen in the womb & for the further nurturing committed. Hence, Baby Welcome Room [Labour Room] should have appropriate pleasant milieu. Healthcare providers ought to behave with love, affection, & empathy. Mothers should feel at home. These changes will give her a positive birthing experience, which will increase the oxytocin levels in her body which in turn will help easy delivery & successful breastfeeding. Through these changes, the mother would feel motivated & enthusiastic to happily welcome the newborn. Breastfeeding should be initiated with breast-crawl method after delivery. A healthy competition for the best baby welcome room will also stimulate changes at a wider level.
