MOTHER SUPPORT GROUP PROJECT By BPNI (Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India) Maharashtra State Branch

PROJECT PROFILE

Programme Area : Goregaon to Dahisar (North Mumbai)
Extended area: Maharashtra

Immediate Beneficiaries : Mothers Support Group Leaders

Curriculum : Breastfeeding (18 hour HLMT course, viva, ability to conduct pre delivery and post delivery group counselling), child caring practices, child survival strategies & maternal health

Trainers : Pediatricians and Obstetricians

Final Beneficiaries : Mother & children, Maternity Homes, Nurses, BFHI, TMW (Traditional Massage Women: malishwali Bai), movement for promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding

Project Time Frame : Ongoing project

Year started : 1995

Anticipated completion date : ?

Stages of programme implementation : 3 phases
A) Covering up majority of maternity homes in main programme area by MSG
B) Starting satellite areas of MSG activity in nearby areas
C) Starting satellite areas of MSG activity in each district place of Maharashtra

Financial support : UNICEF (Mumbai) & WABA

Final outcome expected : Improved infant & child morbidity & mortality & better maternal health due to improved knowledge, attitudes & practices of mothers in areas mentioned under curriculum.

Progress till august 2001 : Total thirty MSG Leaders will be certified. Thirty five maternity homes from Vileparle to Virar have been covered by MSG. Satellite MSG has taken good roots in Amravati. Activity has been initiated in Pune & Dombivali.
