Concept Of Mother Support Group (MSG)

What is a Support Group?

Support Group is a relatively old concept for medical science. However in India the idea has still not taken roots. Patients (& their family members) apart from medical treatment also need lot of information, encouragement, support, individual conversation & somebody to share their experiences. Though any non-medical person can give this support, it is best given by other patients (& their family members) who have\had experienced similar illness. Such experienced patients usually organise themselves in groups called support groups eg. Diabetes Support Groups, Asthma Support Groups etc.

What is a Mother Support Group?

In a broader sense any individual or organization which supports the mother to breastfeed successfully should be included under mother support. Family members, friends, neighbors, family physician, obstetrician, maternity home\service staff, child specialist (pediatrician), malishwali bai (TMW: Traditional Massage Woman) & society in general all form a part of mother support.

However specifically 'Breastfeeding Mother to Mother Support Group (MSG)' consists of experienced & knowledgeable mothers who provide information, encouragement, support & help to new mothers for breastfeeding & care of the newborn. Opportunity is also provided to converse & share their experiences.
